What to do if you spill something on your carpet

If you catch it quick enough, you can actually prevent a stain regardless of what the liquid is; even red wine, grape juice, coffee, etc. As soon as incident occurs, get a dry cloth, a wet cloth and some dish soap. Dab the area softly with the dry cloth and try to soak up as much of the spill on the carpet as possible. Then put some of the dish soap on the wet cloth and continue to gently dab the carpet. Repeat this process with the dry and wet cloth a few times. Chances are you don’t have a personal steam cleaner on hand, but if you do, obviously use it right away. If you don’t have a store bought steam cleaner, be sure to call a professional company and schedule an appointment right away. If you give a carpet cleaner a chance to get to the spill within 24 – 48 hours of the spill, it’s likely a stain will be prevented.

A few factors:

If the carpet is newer, it will have a better chance at not being stained. When the carpet is manufactured, it comes with a protective coating on the fibers. Overtime, this protector wears off from walking on it. The time between soaking up the stain, jotting it with a soapy wet cloth, and hiring a professional carpet cleaner; are the most crucial elements to preventing a stain. If your carpet is less than a few years old and the coating holds up, you should be able to prevent the stain yourself. However, if for some reason all of the spill isn’t gone from cleaning it up yourself, you’ll need to hire a professional carpet cleaning company.
